PFAS-free fire defense arrives at Rio Rico Fire Department.
“On Tuesday, May 11, The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality helped the Rio Rico Fire Department remove over 250 gallons of cancer-causing chemicals used to put out fires. The agency replaced the deadly carcinogen PFAS with a liquid called F-500 Encapsulator Agent (F-500 EA). According to Chief Mike Urbanski, this chemical works with water to help extinguish fires more quickly while also being safer for firefighters responding to fires.”

An exploding problem: fires sparked by lithium batteries are confounding firefighters.
“Some fire departments in Arizona and elsewhere have added a new tool to fight these kinds of fires: a chemical additive specially designed to absorb heat and put down certain kinds of blazes. The product, known as F-500 Encapsulator Agent (F-500 EA), has shown in early tests to be effective at putting out the stubborn fires created by lithium-ion batteries.”

The new 2022 version of NFPA 18A specifically delineates Encapsulator Agents as well as offers the fire testing criteria for agents to be able to call themselves encapsulators.”

The certification was sequel to the series of tests conducted on the product by various ministries, agencies and departments of government during which the product’s efficacy and environmental friendliness were confirmed.”
